FTC trains Paraffin Safety Association of South Africa Community Champions and Mentors

FTC conducted a two-week training programme in October 2009 for 17 Community Champions of PASASA. The task of PASASA is a huge one, which is primarily the promotion of safety in the usage of paraffin as a form of energy. Not only does it have the potential to reduce harm for mostly the indigent population of South Africa but could also improve their livelihood and enhance development. Community Champions will be in the forefront of the endeavour to educate their communities of best ways of handling paraffin. The need for their own personal development could therefore never be over emphasized. The training intervention provided by FTC covered administration, facilitation, research and mobilisation, networking, understanding local government.

The course was an eye opener for the Community Champions. Most of them expressed appreciation of the need to continuously improve themselves for the betterment of their knowledge and skills in discharging PASASA's mandate. Parallel to training the 17 Community Champions, FTC also trained the regional managers of PASASA on Mentoring. The regional managers of PASASA had to provide support to the newly-trained community champions and included an initial introduction to mentorship in the form of a one day workshop with accompanying manual, followed by 5 weeks of online mentorship support (with assignments for continued learning and reflection). A reflective interview was arranged with a representative mentor and mentee following the programme to receive feedback and assess the value of continued learning. The course was run and supported by FTC facilitators.

As a continued learning and support for the PASASA Community Champions' following their training, PASASA and FTC underwent a mentorship programme that would allow for a structured approach to mentoring. It is our belief that carrying out a formal mentorship training - where a company would otherwise rely on and employee's intuitive skills - provides a basis from which to collectively approach an agreed mentorship programme, with scheduled weekly opportunities to reflect on methodologies and challenges and apply individual and contextual changes where necessary.
